How To Make Sure Your Kids are in Good Health – Guest post of the month

Spread the love

There is no place like home, for sure, but even this haven of peace is not free from unhealthy germs and diseases. As with any other living space, your home too may be susceptible to the influence of dangerous bacteria and toxins, which can have an adverse effect on the physical and mental health of your children once they are exposed to it.

There are several ways in which you can avoid this scenario and create a safe living space for your children. Since young children tend to spend about 90 percent of their time indoors, it is important to keep a healthy home environment, where the children will not come across health hazards. Here are some ways in which you can keep a healthy home:

Install window guards

It is important to install window guards like bars and stops on each window in your home, especially those situated at an elevation. This is to stop your children from tumbling out of the windows and seriously injuring themselves. Use cordless windows and coverings, since babies and toddlers can strangle themselves on the cords of window coverings.

Check for radon radiation

Radon is a toxic gas released when the natural uranium contained in soil and water breaks down. Radon has been regarded as the leading cause of lung cancer among people who do not smoke. A radon testing kit is easily available in the market, and this inexpensive device will help you check the radon levels in your home. If the levels are too high, you will need to call a professional to help lower the radiation levels in your home.

Be wary of pesticides

You may feel frustrated with all the bugs and flies in your home, but while getting rid of them, keep in mind that the toxins used to get rid of the bugs are extremely poisonous. The pesticides can linger on for long after they have been sprayed, affecting the air within your home which your children will be breathing. Breathing in these toxins can have extremely harmful effects, including neurological problems and cancer.

Instead of spraying your home with pesticides, you can seal off all the crevices in your floor and walls which can act as a potential entry point for bugs. Install mosquito nets on the windows to keep out flies. In a situation where you have to use pesticides, make sure that the amount sprayed into the air is minimal, or use gels and powders instead of sprays.

Get rid of allergens in the air

Since children breathe in more air than adults do, they are much more susceptible to allergens like dust and pollen in the air. Long term exposure to these airborne irritants can cause severe damage to the sensitive lungs of children.

Use exhaust fans in the kitchens and bathrooms and dehumidifiers in the living space and bedrooms. Make sure to keep the air breathable and fresh. Also, if you are moving into a new house, get it checked for mold right off the bat. Open doors and windows every day to let the fresh air circulate through the house.

Make sure that the products you use are not poisonous

Keep your child away from all poisonous products, like cleaners, medication, toxic cosmetic items, nail polish remover, perfume, bath oil, mouthwash, aftershave and all that. Children are curious beings- they won’t hesitate before eating or drinking anything. So, it is important for you to keep all these items locked away, out of the reach of your children.

Make sure the water in your home is pure

The water your child drinks is probably more important than the food you eat. When the water is not purified, it can carry multiple waterborne diseases that can make your child very, very sick. Using a good quality water purifier is absolutely crucial since it will ensure a continuous supply of it without you having to boil water every time. Since children mostly get sick from drinking contaminated drinking water, a good water purifier becomes a necessity. The use of a water purifier in the home will protect your children from all these diseases.

Install a fire alarm

No matter how protected your household is, the risk of a fire is always present. The danger of an unprecedented fire for young children is much higher than older children or adults. Because it is harder for them to escape the building on their own.

To avoid this situation, install a fire alarm on every floor, or outside every bedroom. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the home. Learn the proper way to use a fire extinguisher.

These are some of the ways in which you can keep your home healthy for your children. These easy steps will protect both you and your family from common health problems and physical hazards in the future.
